April 2024
Hello, my dear friend,
I was walking in the bluebell forest one bright April morning, taking in the beauty of nature. I was thinking that once I got back home, I had to get groceries from our local supermarket, we had a dentist appointment in the afternoon and there was a drawing I needed to scan and send whenever I had time during the day. I then realised I wasn’t taking in the beauty of nature at all. I was barely even there to speak of. I looked at Luther, walking at my side and in his hunting dog way, his ears were pricked and all his attention was there. He had noticed the squirrel climbing a tree to our left and the bird (or the mouse?) making a ruffle in the bushes below. All of this, I had totally missed. Ema, be more like Luther.
I looked at the bluebells more attentively that time. Everything coming up later that day could wait until it was time for it. I use this illustration as a reminder of the present moment. You can find it through my Redbubble shop.
I also made a pattern depicting the bluebells.
You can find it through my Spoonflower and Redbubble.
The second pattern I made this April depicts little fairies living on tree branches. As a child, I often imagined I was a little person with wings hopping happily about on the branches (of the Christmas tree!), admiring the needles and the ornaments.
You can find this pattern as well through my Spoonflower and Redbubble.
I’ve experimented with some lettering around the theme that’s occuping my attention: (over)thinking. Click on the image to find the designs via Redbubble.
At the art academy I have been working with acrylics further. I made this self portrait inspired by Ensor for a national exhibition in Belgium. If you like it, you can vote for my work here. Selected works will be displayed in the Museum of the Royal Library in Brussels.
Here are other examples of works in acrylic:

I will always love to draw flowers and plants, so here they are, accompanied by a cow and her calf I see almost every day on our walks.
Till next month,
Ema

Drawing is not about what you see as much as what you can make others see.
