November 2024

Hello, my dear friend,

November has been dark, cold, and rainy, as Novembers often are. This month’s illustration is inspired by the mostly bare branches, occasionally covered in a thin layer of frost on chilly mornings.

The Lady of the River

I really went all out with the dots in this last pattern. But since my love for dot patterns knows no bounds, I’m happy with how it turned out.

I’m not sure about the colors, though. The dark blue background feels fitting, as it echoes the deep, dark river.

Here’s an overview of the collection—slow but steady progress. I think the next pattern should incorporate some greens.

Logically, the next one should be about the underwater palace, but we’ll see where inspiration takes me.

Pattern for Spoonflower

I created a pattern featuring cowboys! It’s not a theme I would normally choose, but it reminds me of when I was skeptical about playing Red Dead Redemption—and that turned out to be one of the best games ever. So, if anything, I should have a positive bias toward cowboys.

I also created a forest themed pattern, featuring squirrels.

Sketchbook

I have finished my little square sketchbook and started a new one! Here is what I drew:

When I started this little sketchbook, I made a promise to myself to draw in it every day. I’m allowed to miss one day if absolutely necessary, but I should never miss two! I’m proud to say I haven’t missed a single day!

I made some more sketches at the academy, including additional model drawings and portraits of each other. I’m trying to reintroduce color, but the simplicity of the black line is hard to resist.

I got some help while taking pictures of my sketchbook:

That’s the news from the past month. Wishing you warmth and joy for the winter holidays ahead!

All the best,

Ema

Drawing is not about what you see as much as what you can make others see.

I am an artist and illustrator who believes in the power of images to make people happy. I’m most known for my colorful cards and patterns depicting people, flowers, and animals, in a sensitive and feminine style using flat simplified shapes.

I live in Beersel, Belgium, and I like to go on long walks with my little dog, Luther.
